Library Director

Not more than 40 hours per week; 32-36 on average.

Salary negotiable depending on hours worked, level of library work experience, and amount of library education. 

The Clinton Township Public Library is currently searching for a Library Director. We serve a township of about 1800 people located in Waterman IL, about 12 miles south of DeKalb, IL. The library is a strong center for our community. Therefore, we are looking for someone who will create a welcoming environment while reaching out to all of our patrons, whether it be through the school, churches, various community groups, or local businesses. The library has a Board of Trustees consisting of 7 members who are very active in and supportive of the library. We are seeking an individual who is proficient in technology, laws, procedures and reports pertaining to libraries, writing grants, and library programming that will reach out to all age groups. Strong communication skills will be important as well when working with staff, patrons, and the library board. An individual with library experience is preferred. Having a Library Science degree or some classes toward that degree would be desirable, but not required. It is important that the candidate be organized, have good judgment, and be able to maintain confidentiality.
 

The following is a list of responsibilities of the Library Director position.

● The Director will plan and administer all aspects of library operations including:

● Taking responsibility working with the Library Board and staff in achieving the vision and goals of the library

●Supervising staff and volunteers

● Implementing policies set by the Library Board

● Developing and promoting innovative and creative programs for all age groups

● Provide diverse and accessible collections to best serve library patrons

● Act as the representative at local and state meetings, as needed

● Perform regular library duties, such as circulation desk and cataloging, as needed


 

The following is a list of qualities desired in our Library Director:

● Effective interpersonal relations, including strong team-building, active listening and problem solving skills

● Experience in financial management, budgeting, district library law and operating policies and strategic planning, grant writing, and the ability to share that knowledge with others

● Strong communication skills when working with the board, staff and the community in promoting library services and the value of the library including the use of social media

● Proficiency with technology associated with library management, software applications, and hardware maintenance

● Experience in materials selection, collection maintenance and organization with a true love for libraries and the principals they support

Part-Time Library Clerk 
 

The Clinton Township Public Library is seeking a new part-time Library Clerk to join our team! We are a small library located in Waterman, IL and serve a population of 1,868.

The Library Clerk job is a public-facing position, serving our patrons by offering circulation, reference and reader's advisory, technology access, and other services. We are looking for an applicant who has a positive attitude, strong computer skills, and a willingness to work closely with the public on a daily basis. Library experience not required.

Please note that our building is only accessible via stairs.

The duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing friendly customer service via phone, email, chat, and in-person.

  • Performing general circulation and technical services duties.

  • Shelving materials and maintaining appearance of library

    • Involves stairs and regular bending, twisting, lifting, and reaching.

  • Assisting patrons in locating library materials via reader's advisory and processing interlibrary loan and new materials requests.

  • Assisting patrons with the use of library equipment and technology.

  • Working with the library team to develop and implement programming.

  • Maintaining patron confidentiality and upholding library standards and best practices.

  • Promoting and maintaining the accessibility of library resources.

  • Assisting with seasonal events such as during the summer reading program.​

  • Regular collaboration and communication with other staff.​

As a small library, staff are welcome to explore their interests in specific library duties . In addition to regular circulation duties listed above, staff may also participate in:

  • Implementing regular programming such as leading story time, book group, craft night, etc.

  • Promoting the library using digital and print media.

  • Collection development and management.

  • Cataloging. 

  • Outreach services.

  • Children and young adult services.
